That is a Blue Glassy Tiger butterfly (Ideopsis vulgaris macrina). For this shot, I guess that external flash has been used as main light, at high shutter speeds, hence resulting in the black background. Manual mode I guess? What were your settings? Personally prefer to see a more green background. The flash is a little too harsh as well, flowers on the stalk are blown out.

thanks Garion for the ID ...i cant recall the settings...i agree with your comments...these are handheld shots , thats why i set to high shutter speeds. I am going to try other settings.

For handheld, try using shutter speeds which are equal or higher than 1/focal length (the reciprocal rule for handholding). You are using Tamron 180mm rite? Such lens is not easy to hand hold at low shutter speeds. It would be ideal if some form of support is used, ie monopod or tripod. You can try around 1/160, f8 -f11 and boost ur ISO to 400. But your hands need to be very steady, to get sharp shots.

Just to share, and also for comparison, a Blue Glassy Tiger shot taken also handheld using a Sigma 180mm. Settings were shutter speed of approx 1/125, aperture f11, ISO 400. Note the non-black bg. (got some highlights due to shot against the trees). Needed to take a series of shots before I could get this fairly sharp shot.

Hey, looks like we are all in the mood for butterflies... here's my contribution taken from Perlis... also handheld. I think this is either a different species or subspecies because the patternings are different from the ones you guys posted...

Nice one there MM, yup that is definitely a M'sian butt....also presumably a Glassy Tiger but it has quite different markings from its sg counterpart...could be a sub species Will check with my buttpals frens for ID..

BTW did u shoot the Rajah Brooke's Birdwing when u were there? Possibly Malaysia's most famous butterfly...

The Rajah Brooke was quite commonly found in the Cameron Highlands and the Titiwangsa range of mountains. We were in the lower limestone range of Northern Malaysia. Did not see any Rajahs there, but there sure were loads other butterflies there...

Oh my God!!!! Those coloured spots are all butts? There's like so many of them!!! Streambanks and other water sources are known places for many butts to congregate and puddle in (i.e. suck up salts and nutrients with their proboscis), but this is the first time I've seen such a concentration of them!

That's only like half of what's left when I found them... the other half flew off when I went amongst them to take the shot. There were so many butterflies everywhere. On the pillars, you can see their cacoons at varying ages of maturity, and in the early morning seeing the butterflies emerge and drying up their wings before their first flights.

... and where there is salt, you'll sure to find them flocking to u...

unfortunately I did not pack a macro with me most of the time and hence not much butt-shots. The last one was taken with the 500mm, and the wide was on a 12 mm. The focus was caving... hence got loads of calcium carbonate shots. There were loads of lizards there too... will post them on a later date to share with all.
