Default Raptor Watch Outside Pummkin's Pad!

Something great happened this morning during my quiet time at my bedroom window. Amidst my conversation with My Maker, part talking & part looking out for Ruddy, I thought I saw a swarm of bees. And I did remember asking Him when I could see His phenomenal plan of sending the raptors up & down the latitudes as I had to miss the event in Port Dickson because it clashed with my Koh Lipe trip. I almost leapt out of my bedroom window in excitement when I realised those bees were actually raptors...!!! My prayers were answered!! All praises & glory to Him!!!

Presenting to you, UP TOO CLOSE & REALLY PERSONAL ENCOUNTER.....

Sorry, this content is visible to registered members only.
The arrival.....

....the swirl.....

........there are many.......

.....and there's more...!

I witnessed a total of four groups/flocks before I dashed away to church & with each flock, they circled eye level & moved from right to left & up the hot air column until they looked really like bees before they soared off......

Second flock!

.....swirling round & round.....

....this flock had more birds!!! I almost pengsan in awe of this!!!

....was wondering when they would get tired but they don't seem to be....

......gaining momentum & height now....

....and off they go!!!!

It may look like the same flock but each of these pictures were taken over a time span of 1 hour. And these raptors were taking advantage of the rising hot air to gain momentum to their flight back north.....wherever they may be going! (Where on earth are they from???)

At one point, they were right outside my bedroom & just a few floors up from the highest level!!!! Aaaaarrrrgggh! This is way too exciting for me!!!

You can imagine the adrenaline rush of holding the camera & alternating between my E500 & C5050 for a video shot!!! I will post it up on YouTube once I get broadband access tomorrow morning. I thought this was way too cool, to encounter these migrants & having a 'Raptor Watch' just outside my bedroom!!!

Tankew, Sandy & t_tsen! There were butterflies in my stomach too!!! They kept on coming! In my three years of living in this aparment, I have never seen this phenomenon. I guess it's possible that I missed it since I'm always travelling. I'm facing south & sometimes, I see some long-legs-long-necks flying by too!!! Hiyah, makes me want to stay home more.....

Here is the link of the uploaded video. The tiny specks in the sky were just swirling & then towards the end, will spread to soar away! (Resolution isn't fantastic as they were really high up in the sky.... )

very interesting sight from your window, pummkin..

interesting fact i just picked up from SBI group..

they tried to compare the tally taken in jawa (taken by the indo team) wth the one at tanjung tuan.

most would have assumed that the birds profile would be the same.. since the birds would pass thru semarang, puncak and then cross over the lampung to south sumatera before crossing the narrow straits to melaka, but look at the profile..

tally from semarang (heavily concetrated on chinese sparrowhawk)
oriental honey buzzard: 557
Japanese sparrowhawk: 22
Chiense sparrwohawk: 6919
the above tally was taken over 13 days

and tally frm tanjong tuan (heavily concentrated on OHB and baza).
OHB 25,222
Black Baza 1,810
Chinese Goshawk 31
Grey-faced Buzzard 5

my questions then are:
1. does that mean in the migratory path the 25k strong contigent on the OHB stop in sumatera and doesnt continue to jawa?

2. what happens to the 6900 chinese sparrowhawk if they're not picked up at tanjong tuan?

sorry for the OT..

Hey wilis, it's not off-topic at all. In fact, I've been wondering myself, if it flew that far down south, where would all the record (& nesting if any) of landings & roostings be? Wouldn't they be significant enough to be spotted by a birder? We are talking about hundreds if not thousands of BIG BIRDS that make a louder & more distinctive noise than other birds & yet only two of the 6 to 7 species are ever recorded at Tanjung Tuan.

Could it be that there's another route that they are taking which we don't know about??? Another superhighway? After all, if Ruddy can end up in my backyard, anything can happen right??? (And I don't think he's lost because my neighbour had spotted him in January!!!)

*Back to work......back to work.... *

i dream of a patch of land somewhere in southern sumatera..where there are 25 thousand OHB roostings...

u have a valid point.. maybe the sparrowhawk have longer flight range and therefore they're not relying on the narrow crossing point between riau and tanjong tuan.. maybe they can just cross from any other point.. just a maybe.

They turn on their stealth mode when they enter malaysian airspace, or fly below the radar......

It is an interesting point that has been raised about the whereabouts of these mass raptor roostings.

Pummkin, you won't believe this, we saw them at 6.30pm on Saturday in Frasers, flying north, and today, I got a call from a friend of mine who has actually video taped the birds opposite the jungle where I stay, perching and resting for the night. He told me he saw hundreds of them up in the trees, and he has the video to prove it.

Pummkin, looks like the raptors have added your apartment building on their flight path. Next time we won't go to Tg Tuan but will head up to your place instead.

hi wilis
at the tanjong tuan raptorwatch, there were talks by the experienced birders about the distribution of southbound OHBs after crossing to sumatra. apparently they are supposed to be an important source for controlling bee populations on sumatra, which probably means that they spread out over the entire island (if we can call that huge landmass an island).
