I have not been to such environment before, but from what I read abt accounts from photojournalists covering the Gulf War, what they did is bring extra bodies, lots of ziploc bags, cleaning equipment and stuffs. The desert sand is a killer for the electronics, there was one guy using 3 D1x bodies and even for pro body, the sand was so fine that it got in everywhere and killed off 2 of his bodies.
Prolly what you can do is try to minimise exposure of ur equipment to the harsh environment (sand, sun, dirt etc), ziploc everything, try bringing a spare/film body if possible, bring cleaning equipment (blower, brush, ccd cleaner), also try not to change lenses too often, esp out in the open, to prevent the dust and sand from getting inside.

Well said.
I had an experience at the Thar desert in India and that was expensive. What is amazing is that the sand is so fine and can get in everywhere! Servicing for the entire set that came back was a back breaker (or in this case wallet breaker).

hahahaha !!!!
looks like my baggage for this trip is going to be super heavy !!!!!!!!

Hmm... maybe the Olympus E1 system might perform in those cases ... Seen the ad somewhere where this piece of equipment was deployed in dessert conditions.

PJs, they use primes to prevent moving parts and also a few bodies to prevent any changing of lens. In that environment, a 35mm f/1.4 and a 85mm f/1.2 will be enough. Bodies, a SLR and a DSLR will be great man! Leave the scenery to the slide maker! :D
