Hi there,

Can you give a comparison of size with the little tern that seems to be the popular subject at the moment, ( one good turn deserves another ??).

Were the photos taken in Singapore ??

A quick scan of the books doesn't show up anything obvious.

That appears to make it even smaller than the Little tern.

Smith, it is slightly bigger than the little tern.

I have seen one last year within the flock of little tern.

Cheah, I believe this to be a white wing tern. Not whether the spots is due to breeding/non bredding transition plumage. It appear that only this one is having this plumage from the three we have seen.

During Breeding season, the upper body will turn into black. Another tern with similar plumage is the black tern.

Could it also be a whiskered tern in transition plumage?

I did suspect it to be the whiskered tern at first but the black dot behind the ear is diagnotic for white winge and black tern is not found in Singapore, I believe. The Whiskered tern is also bigger, about 3cm longer than Little terns in average.

So I can only conclude this is a WWT. Anyone wants to confirm?

BTW, I believe some website has identify the white winged tern as a whiskered. The best way is to buy one of those book with graphical illustration on the birds but they are quite expensive. Books with photo some time don't shows very well...

BTW Eric, were you with DT on Sunday?

Hi Vincent,

Was with Fred on Sunday on site. Hiliary was there too. There was another NPS (I am guessing) shooter there too, but I was not introduced to him. Sunday was much more conducive to shoot... with only 4 shooters, we had loads of space to move around. DT told me that he was not free this weekend so I did not disturb him for sunday.

Hope to meet up with you one day soon.
