Hi
I've been using a D70, then I borrowed a D2h and I was
comparing both results..

Interestingly even for 4MP I observed that the D2h captured a lot
more information and a lot more tonal range than
the D70.

I sold the D70 after Nikon Refurbished it when it suddenly broke down.
My Friend's d2h suddenly broke down and I have to send it to Nikon
for major repair, it had less than 200 clicks on it.

So today I picked up a D70S and noted that the ISO800 noise
is really 'quite clean'.. no red channel noise if the subject is
properly exposed. I then took a few clicks with the D2X at
the store at ISO800 and found that the iso800 noise on the D2X
at 12MP with a CMOS sensor is greater or rougher than that
of the D70S at the same ISO.

I would have expected that the noise would be equal to that of
a D70S since since it has a CMOS sensor.. but was disappointed.

So I miss the fantastic response of the D2h and the great
quality of the LBCAST CCD sensor..

I was wondering if someone can share the information on a
D2hS if they have got one.. has the ISO800 on the D2hs
been improved from the old D2h?

Here is a plover at ISO800 on the D70S. taken flash free at
18:30 today.

I try not to take shots at iso800 but would like to have that
capability when I need it.

I hear that ISO800 on the Canon 1DS 8mp is very clean.
is this true?

My friends want me to dump all my Nikon and move to Canon
but Since I do have some nikon lens and access to even more
, I don't feel like jumping ship for now.

I cannot comment on Nikon but here is an unprocessed, uncropped, resized image taken with the Canon 20D at ISO 1600 at 6.45pm. without flash.

Hi
Yes, I note the D70S has those 'dotty' background at ISO800
compared to yours at ISO1600 which is smooth.

I do have taken 20D photos at 1600, if you make a mistake and expose past a certain limit, red channel noise will jump out at you. Anyway for daytime shots seems the 20D is very versatile.

Hi Eagleeye,

There is no gain without loss here. From what I figure, you are trying to get details while wanting to keep a high ISO image clean.

A "clean" image will depend mainly on how you expose your shot. A given scene, especially those with more shadow details, will give rise to more digital noise. The picture posted by Joe has minimal shadow details that will affect noise presence, and hence, will exhibit less noise.

That said, the fact is that high ISO images aren't quite capable of retaining fantastic details, so when such is the case, you have to know your limitations.

I sincerely suggest you do not bother too much into such technicalities and get into shooting instead, I feel this will do you more good than to fret over these stuffs.

Just my 2 cents :)

Allan ..correct me if I am wrong..this picture you have seems to have jpeg artifacts when cropped and resized to smaller images rather than noise...thats the same problem that I am facing with my S2 that is based on Nikon F80 system....which till now no solutions after banging my head around..

Change to Canon system....try out the 20D/350D...and if you can afford..1D Mark II.
