On a recent birding trip to Subic rainforest (Philippines), a perched Dollarbird allowed me over 120 shots from a distance of over 50 meters (164 feet +) with my 350D + Sigmonster.
About 1/3 of these shots were with the bare lens at 800 mm (AF) and 2/3 with the Sigmonster + Sigma 2x TC at 1600 mm (MF).
The sheer number of shots at the same bird under equivalent lighting conditions allowed me to reduce the chances of focus errors. This in turn afforded me the opportunity to analyze with a high degree of certainty whether using a 2x TC is worth it, instead of just upressing.
Here's a couple of crops from the best shots taken with and without a 2x TC:

My conclusion?
The results I get in the field mirrors those of what show in my controlled tests - using a TC beats upressing.
Comments are welcome.
