Hi,
Wow, this is a great offshoot of CS! Love the birds here...
Anyway, I was wondering if anybody has any experience with the Sigma 500mm f4.5 lens. I have gone through all the review sites and would like some local(ish) input too. As I'm still in Bangkok, could somebody help me on the pricing of this lens too? Thank you!
Cheers,
Nick

Hi
Welcome to AWA! As to your query, perhaps you might want to check this out:

IMO if $$$ is no problem, go for the EF 500mm f/4 L IS if you are using Canon. At f/4 you still can AF at f/5.6 if you are using a non pro body with the 1.4X TC.

The thing about AFing is alright. I have a 1DMKII so AF should be alright at f6.3... Thanks for the link. Haha! I forgot about that link, I actually posted there too! lol...

The last time I checked with MS Color, it was about $5K+.Wished that Sigma made an f4 version, with OS, for the same price. The original Canon/Nikon are so ex. :tears:

Heya! Long time no talk!
I think I'm gonna go for the 500mm f4L IS USM. Too unsure about the Sigma at all. How long does it take to order one from www.adorama.com?
Cheers,
Nick
Nick... skip the 500 and go for the 300-800 f5.6 :thumb: :p
How you lug it ard is another matter tho... hahaha

NickSteady lar bro Nick!!! Good choice there. :thumb: But have u take into consideration its bigger size and weight, which takes some time to get used to, and you have to upgrade your bag, dry cabinet, tripod and head (prefarably Wimberley/Wimberley Sidekick) to accomodate this lens? Its a big purchase, so think carefully before going ahead. Are you going for the grey market or the one w/ int'l warranty set? ($200USD difference)
If u have cc, the whole process prolly won't take very long. Maybe within two weeks of ordering online, they will have it shipped to you.

Yo bro nick,
With the combo of Mark II + 500mm f/4 + 1.4 TC you got yourself the 'dream' combo for birding. Missed the 8 fps sound produced by your Mark II...hope to hear them again soon. kekeke :D
How fast you will get your len is depend on the delivery options you choose and the avaliable of the stocks, I believe you will able to receive it within 4 to 5 working days. Check out bhphotovideo.com, they also sell this babe.
I would not recommend the sigma 300 - 800mm f/5.6 coz it is huge (monster's size) and heavier than the 500mm f/4. I think you will not go far carrying this monster on foots. Saw someone carrying this monster len once in SBG.....nearly dropped my jaw when I saw how big it is

Hi guys!
Thanks so much for your helpful responses! I am fully aware of the extra costs involved when getting the super-teles. I plan to get this lens with the Wimberley Sidekick, but still considering the other one (Forgot what its name was... the Gimbal one.. :) ) oh yea, and also a new bag for the lens (The Lowepro Lens Trekker series)
I'm planning to order the lens in the near future from the US, so if you guys want something, do let me know so we can share the costs and make it cheaper for all of us! :) I think I'll put in the extra US$200 for the international warranty... Can't be too sure of what will happen in the future..
PS: Bro Arthur, my exams will end at the end of May so I'll be back in S'pore for a while and then we can go birding then! Can't wait... Haven't touched my camera for long already... Touch books until get paper cut... :p
I think I'll give the 300-800 a pass... I'll need to buy a new pickup truck to carry it around... hehe... Would like to see liquidstone's 300-800 in use though. Seeing pictures of it reminds me of Vincent Thian and his pictures of the EF 1200mm... hehe...
Oh yea by the way, the net cost of the lens from US is cheaper than getting it in S'pore right? That's what I've been hearing...
Cheers,
Nick
