1. Sigma APO MACRO SUPER II 70-300mm F4 - 5.6

2. Tamron 200-400 F/5.6 LD

Or neither? :D

If I own a DSLR (Canon), my personal favourite everyday birding len will be one of these following with the combo of 2X TC = 600mm and len still bright/fast enough and still able to AF  :

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Len; or
Tamron 300mm f/2.8 LD IF Autofocus Len; or
Tokina AF 300mm f/2.8 AT-X 300AF Pro IRF Autofocus Len; or
Sigma Zoom 120-300mm f/2.8 EX APO IF HSM Autofocus Len.

Unfortunately, my present saving still not enough.... :tears:

Cheers

given just these 2 lenses.....i pick the 200-400.
better reach and just "2x zoom", got a feeling pics should be better.
:dunno:

If you are planning to use it for birding, I would go for the 200-400 as we need the reach more than the speed.

I thought you will be going for the 400mm f/2.8?

Checked the price, almost equivalent to the 600mm f/4  So decided to let it be my 'dream len' (sleep and dream about this len).

Cheers

Or consider the legendary Sigma 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX RF HSM aka Bigma.....
Good image quality from 50mm to 500mm.... no kidding... gotta try it to believe it... Good lens to get you started in birding....

But its one heavy lens... still lighter then a 500mm prime though....
